Drumheller has been referred to as the world’s dinosaur capital due to several reasons. Out of many reasons, The Royal Tyrrell Museum is one of the reasons for having the tiniest grain of pollen to the mightiest dinosaur. This world-renowned museum is situated in the Canadian Badlands called Drumheller which is a town northeast of Calgary, in Alberta. Drumheller town often referred to as Dinosaur Valley.
Welcome to Drumheller
We have been so fortunate to visit the Canadian Badlands. It was the North American winter season of 2016 when we visited by a private car. Mere gratitude is not good enough for my brother in law. Rather I should give due credit to him for his kind gesture. Otherwise, it would not have possible to visit this unbelievable museum in the world’s dinosaur capital. But I strongly believe that readers will enjoy reading this post with our travel experience. This is a great place for knowledge seekers who have an interest in Dinosaurs and Fossils. Therefore, the museum offers more than one’s expectation.
Fossil discovery in the world’s dinosaur capital
Hundreds and thousands of people each year captivated by one of the world’s largest collections of dinosaur skeletons. Most of which were discovered in Alberta’s badlands – one of the best places in the world for fossil discoveries. As the primary repository for all fossils found in Alberta, the museum’s collection is so vast and diverse. If any traveler visits this museum, first thing in mind it pops “Man Vs Wild” episode of Discovery Channel. Paleontological researchers from the globe used the museum’s resources for knowledge gathering and sharing. The museum is well equipped with information, that’s why researchers feel comfortable to call Drumheller as being world’s dinosaur capital.
Journey through time scale in the world’s dinosaur capital
In May 2016, the Museum unveiled its first major new exhibit for understanding the 3.9 billion-year-history of life on Earth. Just as calendar divides time into years, months and days, likewise geologic time is divided into eras, periods, and epochs. It was an unbelievable journey for the visitors as they travel to the time scale of 4 eras. They are PRECAMBRIAN, PALAEOZOIC, MESOZOIC (Dinosaur existed during the Jurassic Period), and CENOZOIC era. The epic journey to the world’s dinosaur capital was overwhelming.
Summer education programs in the world’s dinosaur capital
All of the Museum’s dynamic displays spark curiosity, dispel myths, and engage people with learning. Interestingly, in the summer season, visitors can participate in educational programs that interpret how the past and present are related. This is a must-visit museum for family members, especially for kids. They will simply love the tour.
World’s largest dinosaur
I’m not joking, this was really a humongous dinosaur. It was not a flesh and blood dinosaur or even a skeleton of anyone. Rather it was a giant concrete model that visitors can climb through its belly to a viewing platform at the mouth. By the time we reached the dummy center in the evening time, it was shutting down its operation. So, we couldn’t much enjoy the time with this giant dinosaur.
Dinosaur placing in Drumheller
Another eye-catchy thing in Drumheller was finding statues of dinosaurs on every corner. It’s like placing flower tubs in the garden. Throughout the main streets, there are models of various dinosaurs at street corners were placed. Some of the statues are more famous dinosaurs like Dino from the Flintstones. Even some of the streets have been renamed after dinosaurs. I found this pretty cool. The town has charm, and for anyone who loves dinosaurs, it’s an amazing place to be. Every visitor should visit this dinosaur capital of the world at least once.
